This unit is composed of two different modules that can be completed individually (approximately 4 hours each). The modules include:

Students will explore how organisms respond to different antigens through images, videos, scaffolded explanations, and guided questions for the following:
physical, chemical and microbiota barriers
the innate immune response
initiation of an immune response
Biology Unit 4 AOS 1: 1.2 - Acquiring immunity
Students will explore how organisms acquire immunity through images, videos, scaffolded explanations, and guided questions for the following:
the role of the lymphatic system in the immune response
the characteristics and roles of the components of the adaptive immune response
the difference between natural and artificial immunity
Biology Unit 4 AOS 1: 1.3 - Disease challenges and strategies
Students will explore different aspects of disease management through images, videos, scaffolded explanations, and guided questions for the following:
the emergence of new pathogens and re-emergence of known pathogens
scientific and social strategies employed to identify and control the spread of pathogens
vaccination programs and their role in maintaining herd immunity
the development of immunotherapy strategies
