VCE Module
Students will learn about the relationship between nucleic acids and proteins and DNA manipulation techniques and applications.

This unit is composed of two different modules that can be completed individually (approximately 4 hours each). The modules include:

Biology Unit 3 AOS 1: 1.1 - Nucleic acids and proteins

Students will explore nucleic acids and proteins through images, videos, scaffolded explanations, and guided questions for the following:

  • nucleic acids as information molecules

  • universal genetic code and the steps in gene expression

  • the structure of genes

  • gene regulation

  • amino acids and the proteins they make

  • proteins as a diverse group of molecules

  • role of the rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus

Biology Unit 3 AOS 1: 1.2 - DNA manipulation

Students will explore DNA manipulation through images, videos, scaffolded explanations, and guided questions for the following:

  • how enzymes can manipulate DNA.

  • CRISPR-Cas9 origins and applications

  • amplification of DNA using polymerase chain reaction

  • interpretation of gel electrophoresis

  • the use of plasmids as vectors

  • the use of genetically modified organisms to improve crops
