Physics Unit 3 AOS 2 - How are fields used to move electrical energy?

Students will learn about the generation and transmission of electricity.

This unit is composed of two different modules that can be completed individually (approximately 4 hours each). The modules include:

Physics Unit 3 AOS 2: 2.1 - Generation of electricity

Students will use interactive activities including simulations, videos and apps, to:     

  • Calculate magnetic flux when the magnetic field is perpendicular to the area 

  • Investigate and analyse the generation of electromotive force 

  • Explain the production of DC voltage in DC generators and AC voltage in alternators  

Physics Unit 3 AOS 2: 2.2 - Transmission of electricity

Students will use interactive activities including simulations, videos and apps, to:    

  • Compare sinusoidal AC voltages in a constant magnetic field 

  • Compare alternating voltage expressed as the rms to a constant DC voltage  

  • Convert between rms, peak and peak-to-peak values of voltage and current 

  • Analyse transformer action 

  • Analyse the supply of the transmission of power  

  • Identify the advantages of using AC power as a domestic power supply.
